Fleas are one of the more difficult pests to eliminate in a home, but with the help of regular cleaning, treatment for your pets and a few other factors, you can eliminate and prevent infestations fairly effectively.
1.       Clean – One of the most important factors when dealing with fleas is staying clean.  Dust, dirt, and even dirty laundry create ideal breeding grounds for fleas.  Take note of where your pets regularly sit, sleep, or relax, and pay extra attention to cleaning these areas thoroughly at least one to two times per week.  Vacuum anything and everything from carpets to floors, couches and drapes.  This will remove both living and dead bugs as well as most eggs in the location.  Be sure to dispose of the contents of the vacuum each and every time you use it by placing the contents into a sealed plastic bag.  Wash and tiled or hardwood floors thoroughly, paying special attention to any cracks, crevices, and baseboards. Wash or throw away any pet bedding, it is highly likely that these areas are heavily infested with fleas.
2.       Maintain your yard – Sweep porches, steps and decks to prevent spread from the outside in or vice versa.  Cut the grass regularly, and remove any and all debris or clutter prior to completing any exterior flea treatments.
3.       Treat – Make an appointment with both your veterinarian, and a pest control company.  The vet will be able to check your pet for ticks and fleas, as well as provide products for the prevention of fleas on your pets.  The pest control company will be responsible for eliminating fleas both inside and outside of your home.  Through indoor and outdoor treatments, and cooperation from your vet, you will successfully eradicate any infestations you may be facing.
4.       Prevent – Once you have eradicated any infestation in your home, it is vital that you keep up with things to prevent future flea problems.  Treat your pets regularly with preventative medications, and keep up with the housework both in and around your home.  If you notice fleas again, be sure to take immediate action.
